Student and patient in MRI scanner

Congratulations on securing a place to study at Swansea University

Dear Students,

I would like to offer my welcome to Swansea University and to your programme of study towards the MSc in Clinical Science/ MSc in Medical Radiation Physics.

As I am sure you are aware, medical physicists provide a vital role in health-care, and the need to provide adequate and safe training is recognised internationally. Subsequently the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provides a set of free resources for training at a variety of levels and disciplines in the medical radiation arena. I would like to draw particular attention to several texts that will prove invaluable to you in preparation for study on the MSc and subsequent self-directed study.

 Diagnostic Radiology Physics

 Nuclear Medicine Physics

 Radiation Oncology Physics

I recommend that you examine the introductory material in these texts, including chapters on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging; as well as reminding yourself of the knowledge-base, it will give you an idea of the mathematical ability expected of you during the programme.

As our students are typically graduates of the physical sciences or engineering, you may need to get up to speed with your knowledge of human anatomy. There are many free resources for this kind of learning, but I would also like to recommend the following textbook:

Tortora's Principles of Anatomy and Physiology Paperback – 26 May 2017

by Gerard J. Tortora  (Author), Bryan H. Derrickson (Author)

Finally, I would like to recommend a very good book relating to the use of Matlab in radiotherapy and medical imaging.

Clinical Radiotherapy Physics with MATLAB: A Problem-Solving Approach (Series in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering) Hardcover – 6 Jun. 2018 by Pavel Dvorak (Author).

Best wishes,

Dr Richard Hugtenburg

Programme Director MSc Medical Radiation Physics/ MSc Clinical Science (Medical Physics)
